Madhudvisa : Prabhupada always had a close feeling with Jayananda. Jayananda was the nuts-and-bolts man in San Francisco. When he first became a devotee he drove a taxi, even though he had a degree in engineering from the University of Ohio. Somehow he was in San Francisco, became a devotee, and felt responsible for providing money for the temple. In the beginning, Jayananda was one of the few devotees who held down a nine-to-five job. Jayananda would always have a personal feeling if something were wrong or broken in the temple, specifically the cars. You could always find him underneath the cars, fixing them. Srila Prabhupada knew this. He knew that Jayananda was behind the scenes making it all work. Once when Prabhupada was lecturing and Jayananda walked in, Prabhupada said, “Oh, the Goswami has arrived.“
Another time he said, “Jayananda looks just like Lord Chaitanya, big shoulders, big man.” And Jayananda almost blushed his way out of existence. Prabhupada would compliment him like that because Jayananda was naturally so humble.
